Earlier today, an annular solar eclipse was visible in parts of South America, and a partial solar eclipse was visible in other parts of the world — all of them far from where I am, but I’m simmering in the symbolism of the darkening sun during this season of dwindling light. (And I’m using the excuse to send one of these now-rare letters.) This time of year can make entire days feel like golden hour, precious and fleeting, with yellow accents everywhere you look — the shifting shafts of sunlight, the whorling centers of flowers, the leaves beginning to fall. For the first time, I grew a fall garden with the help of a friend, and each day I greet the greens and asters and mums we planted. The radishes were ready for harvest in just a few weeks, and I ate them in a gurkensalat. The landscape is still vibrant with dahlias and roses, and backyard gardens are still laden with squash and tomatoes, but the air is cooler, the days shorter. And in this seasonal transition, I can sense the same yearning that’s been with me all year, through a move and many other changes: to be present inside the current, trying not to grieve the season long before it flows away.

Spotlight interviews will resume with the full moon later this month. Thank you for being here! Send me a message about what you’re up to this season, and how you stay present.
